The Fan-fiction That Converted Me

First of all, I have a confession to make.

I haven't actually read many fan-fictions. At least, many of the ones I've started weren't worth continuing. I've read a lot of first chapters but rarely full, completed stories. The handful I actually enjoyed would collect dust when their author's disappeared on hiatus.

So, yes, my library of read stories boils down to a single digit number that I will not disclose at this time.

Holes

That's right! My first fan fiction was a Holes fanfic called, Another Chance. I assume I was around ten years old, since I was utterly obsessed with the movie when it came out in 2003.

The story follows Holes as it was shown in the movies except from Squid's point of view and the point of view of a girl from his past. Sprinkled into the story were their encounters and relationship before he was sent away at camp Green Lake. The writer did such a great job at working in a whole past for a character we didn't even get to know. They took into account the few details about Squid that were introduced in the movie and made it work. They weaved in a background so seamlessly, that it could've definitely been canon.

Unfortunately, I hadn't been able to find it again. I tried recently and failed.

Why This Story Brought me to the World of Fan-fiction

Writing fan fiction is a story lover's chance to tell the untold side of the stories they love. At the age of ten, this is all fan fiction was to me at the time. I hadn't even known people changed events of an already told story or mixed characters from different books/movies into one plot. For me it was just a fun way to tell the side of a story that didn't get to be told.

On that note, I suddenly feel pumped about writing. 'Til next time, fellow geniuses!
